“Bobbies on Bikes” a winner for Nelson
16 November 2009
The 2009 Cycle Friendly Awards were held on Thursday 12 November in New Plymouth in conjunction with the New Zealand Cycling Conference. The custom mounted Bicycle Bells have become sort after items for both public and private organisations.
This year, Nelson again was a finalist with two entries in the awards; the sealing of the Railway Reserve in Victory and Bobbies on Bikes. It was noted during the awards that both NZTA and Nelson City Council are vying to collect the most awards!
A joint pilot project between Nelson City Council and Police, Bobbies on Bike won the Commitment by a Public Organisation Award. Marg Parfitt, Nelson’s Road Safety Coordinator, accepted the award and also acknowledged the original seed of the concept coming from local cycle advocacy group, Bicycle Nelson Bays.
Bicycle Nelson Bays spokesperson, Anne FitzSimon, congratulates Nelson City Council and the Police for their win with Bobbies on Bikes and their commitment in developing Nelson as a cycle friendly community.
‘We look forward to seeing Bobbies on Bikes continued presence on road and supporting cyclists, by raising their (Police) awareness of weak spots and vulnerability of cyclists’ says Ms FitzSimon.
