New Moon Takes Opening Weekend Record

PRESS RELEASE 23 November 2009

“the Twilight Saga: New Moon” Takes Opening Weekend Record

“The Twilight Saga: New Moon” has set box office history in breaking all records for the best opening weekend ever in New Zealand.

Movie goers showed up en masse to cinemas across the country with “New Moon” grossing over $2,640,000 in its opening weekend (4 days) making it the biggest opening of any film in New Zealand history. The previous record holder was “The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King”.

The film took over NZ$2.6m at the box office from 91 screens nationwide. It opened at cinemas on Thursday 19th November taking over $200,000 from midnight sessions alone. The film will definitely exceed the first movie in the saga, Twilight, which took over $3.7m.

To cope with the demand many cinemas played the film on the hour every hour, with many locations reporting that they had to loop the film into multiple screens.

Commenting on these results Elizabeth Trotman, General Manager for Hoyts Distribution NZ said, “We are thrilled with the performance of New Moon, it is an exceptional result especially for a film playing outside of the school holidays. Records like these do not get broken that easily.”

The third instalment in The Twilight Saga, “Eclipse”, is set to hit New Zealand cinemas in July 2010.
