Despite the promise of time off work, a good meal, and a new pair of socks 43 per cent of men are still not excited about Christmas this year.

On the other end of the scale, with a busy house and a lot of shopping and cooking to look forward to, most women (70 per cent) are full of Christmas spirit.

The survey conducted by supermarket group, New World polled more than 1,000 Kiwis to lift the lid on the nation’s plans for Christmas this year.

New world group manager, Tim Holt says, “Interestingly the survey shows that half of women will be doing most of the Christmas food shop, and 65 per cent will be cooking the main meal, yet it’s the men who aren’t showing as much festive cheer. Perhaps it’s all the preparation that gets you into the Christmas spirit!”

The survey reveals that 41 per cent of Kiwis intend to spend between $150 and $300 on the Christmas food shop.

Some 40 per cent of grocery shoppers plan to hit the food shops three to six days before Christmas, with a further 23 per cent coming in two days before.

“Shoppers will have a much more relaxing time if they plan carefully around these days, write a list in advance and purchase non-perishables as far out as possible”, says Mr Holt.

Forward planning seems to be fine with most of us as 87 per cent of respondents say that supermarkets should not open on Christmas day. The younger generation is more likely to want year round trading with 17 per cent of 18 to 24 year olds, and 15 per cent of 25 to 39 year olds stating they want supermarkets open on Christmas day.

“After all the shopping and Christmas preparations most of us will be spending the day with friends and family. Some 88 per cent of Kiwis will enjoy their Christmas meal at home or a family member’s house, and only one per cent plan to go to a restaurant,” says Mr Holt.

Other survey results:

• Kiwis are happy for shops to show a bit of Christmas cheer with all respondents wanting to see some in-store decorations, most preferring for stores to wait until November (38 per cent) or December (56 per cent) to put them up.


• Some eight per cent of New Zealanders state that they will work on Christmas day. Interestingly Dunedin is well ahead of the national average with 17 per cent of Dunedin residents planning to work on 25th December.


• A shocking 16 per cent of families will make their relatives wait until Christmas afternoon or evening to open their gifts. Most people (75 per cent) cheerfully rip into their presents first thing on Christmas morning.
