Fashion Winner Follows In Her Sister’s High Heel Steps At Ellerslie

More than 25,000 punters streamed through the gates at Ellerslie today, as Auckland turned on the sun for the first day of The New Zealand Herald Christmas Carnival.

From the family friendly Classic Hits Infield, to the VIVA Fashion Village and the glamorous trackside Cuvée Champagne Bar and Lawn, the Ellerslie course was a sea of summer colour, fascinators and hats.

Boxing Day at Ellerslie is synonymous with fashion and 120 well heeled men and women frocked up to strut their stuff on the catwalk, hoping to take home the major prize in the VIVA Fashions in the Field.

This year’s VIVA Supreme Winner, Olivia Moor won the JET Streetwear Under 25 category, before being crowned overall winner and taking home the main prize, a three-month lease on a Mercedes – Benz CLC 200K Coupe and automatic entry into the regional final of Mercedes Prix de Fashion, the national Fashions in the Field on Telecom Derby Day.

Olivia’s victory continues the winning streak at the Boxing Day Races for the Moor family, with her sister Charlotte taking last year’s top honours. Both sisters won wearing dresses designed and made by their mother.

Auckland Racing Club Marketing Director and Fashion Judge, Rachel Holland commented on Olivia’s outfit as being the perfect ensemble for the day.

“Her outfit was exceptionally well coordinated and appropriate for the day. It was feminine, summery and a fantastic reflection of the Boxing Day Races at Ellerslie - Olivia carried it off beautifully,” said Holland .

On the track there was plenty of action, with an outsider storming home to take out the feature race, the Group I Zabeel Classic. Kelt Capital Stakes winner Vosne Romanee beat a top field, with Red Ruler and Tell A Tale taking second and third places.

Katie Lee’s win starts in the Group II Cambridge Stud Eight Carat Classic positions her well to take out the New Zealand Bloodstock Filly of the Year Series.

Apprentice jockey James McDonald increased his lead in the New Zealand Jockey Premiership, riding Zarzuela home in the Group II The New Zealand Herald Great Northern Guineas.

With the stands full, the sun setting on Ellerslie and thousands of revellers celebrating into the twilight, the day of celebrations was another sign that thoroughbred racing is back at its best.

Auckland Racing Club now prepares itself for another busy two days of The New Zealand Herald Christmas Carnival, on Monday 28 December and again on New Year’s Day.
