The Wgtn Actors Studio to make 8 Films
The Wellington Actors Studio to make 8 short films this year in new initiative.
In the long tradition of Kiwi DIY, The Wellington Actors Studio has kicked off a new Short Film Initiative, funding and producing 8 short films this year The Studio will utilise its network of actors, writers and directors who train at The Studio; the wider community of filmmakers and the goodwill here in Wellington for independent filmmaking to begin shooting its first project late April.
The Studio’s director and main acting tutor, Barbara Woods says, “We have so many funny and ridiculously talented people who come through The Studio it seems criminal to keep their brilliance to ourselves.”
Its not just about showcasing talent, it is
also about changing the focus of the independent
and
low-budget filmmaking culture here in Wellington. Woods
argues, “Too often the emphasis is on the technicalities
of the craft as film technophiles want to learn the ropes
and play with the toys. And concept and performance is too
often not giving the same attention and development”
The Studio will aim for one short film shot per month
with the emphasis on concept and
performance.
The
Wellington Actors Studio, based on Dixon Street in the heart
of the city, provides a number of programmes for beginners
and experienced actors; as well as writers and directors; or
those wanting pragmatic, unpretentious personal development
There are film performance classes and workshops but its
main focus is the Meisner Acting Technique: a proven
methodical approach to ignite an actor’s imagination and
be more present and dynamic in performance. Something we
could all use in daily life but is particularly engaging and
inspiring on stage or film.
