Release Of The Week
Hollie Smith - Humour and the Misfortune of Others

At last the long wait is over, Hollie Smith is back and ready to release her second studio album Humour and the misfortune of others on 15th March 2010.

Humour and the misfortune of others is a musical endeavour through which Smiths sultry voice guides the listener across an eclectic sound-scape of emotion, incorporating elements of soul, funk, blues and psychedelia.

The cathartic musical experience of Humour and the misfortune of others occurred at Waiuku's Revolver Studios under the guidance of Wellington multi instrumentalist and producer Rikki Gooch. The album was largely recorded live with minimal takes due to a strong bond between Gooch, engineer Brent Stanton, Smith and the prowess of Smiths band members, Darren Mathiassen (drums), Tyson Smith (guitar) and Creete Haami (bass). This bond is demonstrated on songs Finding Home and Will You Be The One which required no editing during the final cut.

The first single Mamma was released to radio in early February and reminds audiences of Smiths signature style of music: a battle between soul and funk entwining the electricity of Smiths spine tingling powerful voice with soulful gospel with thick basslines.

Album
Edwin Derricutt - Three Hours South

If Symmetry was the reflective, soulful and chilled side of Edwin's skilled acoustic guitar playing and tune-crafting, Three Hours South picks up where the previous albums title track left off. A full band offering, toe-tapping, lighter, cheekier and an infectiously singable collection of pop songs.

The album parades the exceptional local talents of Dean Tinning, Daniel Irvine, Nic Manders, Drew Hutchinson, Luke Thompson and of course Derricutt himself, utilising a sonic palette that includes Höfner bass, ukulele, pump organ, clarinet, whistling, wurlitzer, glockenspiel, slide guitar, ebow guitar, manjo, mellotron, djembe, mandolin, blues harp and a range of percussion instruments including the kitchen cutlery drawer (but not the sink).

Recorded to tape at the revived Revolver Studios, Three Hours South is produced by acclaimed New Zealand producer Nic Manders (Nathan King, Brooke Fraser, Lydia Cole) and mastered in New York by Andy VanDette of Masterdisk.

Edwin is currently on tour until the 20th of this Month.

Album
Fatt Max - Garage Soul

Fatt Max (aka Mark Hill) presents Garage Soul, an album inspired by a love of music, mixed emotions and changing tides.

The first tentative steps along a musical path were taken at age 11 with a guitar in the hand and childhood dreams in the head. Over thirty years later and half a world away from home, the life so far has crystallised into this album.

Three years in the making, the songs draw on varied musical influences that have made such an impact in life, from The Beatles to Zappa, Dylan to Weller, Muddy Waters to Steve Earle.

"The real drive behind this album, the absolute reason for it's very existence stems from a conversation between two brothers. The elder shining a light in the younger's eyes, the younger realising how wrong it was to jettison a musical path. It is a testimony that the songs Walking Man and Fly On The Wall feature this inspiration in person, flowing through the songs with rhythmic spirit - respect and thanks bro." Fatt Max

Album
Nathan Haines - Heaven And Earth

Multi-instrumentalist Nathan Haines returns with his self-produced, seventh solo album Heaven And Earth.

The album features his brother Joel on guitar, Kevin Mark-Trail of The Streets fame, UK soul sensation Vanessa Freeman and a dazzling array of local talent.

More experimental than previous albums, Heaven And Earth incorporates Nathan's trademark soulful soundscapes with a full band, recorded all live to tape at Neil Finn's Roundhead studio.

Album
Evermore - Evermore

A collection of the band's best songs, it takes in the soaring heights of It's Too Late, Can You Hear Me and Light Surrounding You, the party groove of Hey Boys and Girls and the song that announced the band's arrival, Running - the record is more than just a greatest hits, it's a narrative all of its own.

To be able to track the growth of this remarkable band is a joy in itself; to do so accompanied by such strong songs doubly so.

Album
The Nukes - Live

Live is the first release by the Nukes. All the tracks are recorded live at the Titirangi Theatre (their home patch) in December of last year.

The songs are all original and are the culmination of two years work. The album is full of humour, with just a tinge of edginess, as the band endeavour to explore places and themes songs don't usually venture into.

The Nukes bring a fresh approach to the Ukulele, proving that it's possible to be innovative on a charming, but limited instrument.

Album
Sticky Filth - Stainless

Sticky Filth released their third full length album, the return-to-form Stainless in 2005, to a sold out audience at the Taranaki Festival of the Arts that year. They were also blowing out the candles for their 20th anniversary & it would be fair to say, cementing their place as NZ punk rock / hardcore pioneers & trailblazers.

Stainless features 15 new Sticky Filth tunes & two drum n' bass remixes from those talented Concord Dawn chaps.

Sticky Filth truly are legends of the NZ scene & Stainless maintains the timeless sound that is now a huge influence to many existing & upcoming bands. Both old fans & new devotees will be thrilled with 'Stainless'. Recommended.

Now available as a download.

The House Of Capricorn - Sign Of The Cloven Hoof

House Of Capricorn are an Auckland based four piece rock band who have just released their debut album Sign Of The Cloven Hoof.

Released on their own Swamps Of One Tree Hill label, Sign Of The Cloven Hoof blends stoner rock, grunge & doom; while aesthetically they draw strongly on archaic symbolism & scripture.

House Of Capricorn have had a strong hand in establishing the ever-growing NZ stoner rock community, coordinating the annual Eyes of the South Festival for 3 successful years, with the inaugural AK leg, Northern Lights, held in 2009.

With a demo, an EP & a sampler under their belt, the last 5yrs has seen House Of Capricorn playing shows through NZ with a myriad of bands. Their live show has been honed & their chops sharpened – these guys are the real deal!

Album
The Dunstan Rangers - Second Life

Second Life is The Dunstan Rangers' second album - following on from Unhugged - and sees the Wellingon alt country band power their way through songs that believe in melody, lyrics, signature riffs and vocal harmony.

The work of a band comfortable with its current line up of several years. The album shows how they have solidified their playing style around their fourteen self penned melodic songs.
