Playcentre Emergency Services Session in the Park

Auckland Playcentres Association held an Emergency Services Session in Cornwall Park on Saturday 20 March to celebrate the start of Playcentre Awareness Week with over 200 people attending.

Playcentre families from 16 centres from across Auckland gathered together to celebrate Playcentre and have fun. “We were excited to bring together the Police, the Fire Service, St John's Ambulance, Civil Defence and Surf Lifesaving at one venue for our members to explore and enjoy” said Jaidan Mason, Promotions, Auckland Playcentres Association.

Children eagerly clambered through the police cars and ambulance and loved being able to sound the police sirens and use the loud speakers. The fire truck from Ellerslie station put on a great show using its jacks to stabilise the fire truck before extending and rotating its moveable ladder. The fireman on top of the ladder even managed to remove some rubbish from a nearby treetop to the applause of the surrounding crowd.

St John's Ambulance did a roaring trade with “patients”, but only had one real patient on the day who required a plaster for a small cut. The emergency services personnel were bombarded with questions throughout the day. All families received a fabulous Playcentre goodie bag as well as stickers and information packs from Civil Defence.

“This event captures the spirit of Playcentre where we encourage children to explore their environment and learn through play” said Morna Haist, the President of Auckland Playcentres Association. “We encourage families with pre-school aged children to visit their local Playcentre during Playcentre Awareness Week to experience the great activities and equipment we have for children aged 0-6 to enjoy.”
