New Exhibition Looks At Attitudes Towards Animals
New exhibition looks at our attitude towards animals.
Houghton Bay painter Julia Bromley has always had
an affinity for animals. Her latest exhibition, which starts
at Thistle Hall on April 19th,
looks at how people view
animals - whether it be as prey or as a means to make
money.
The show is called "daddy went a hunting" and
explores the relationship between humans and animals. The
paintings depict creatures such as
wolves, deer, owls and
animal human hybrids. She says animals are often used as
symbols in art - an area she was keen to investigate
"I'm
interested in whether the image of an animal can be just of
the animal itself, rather than it being a carrier for human
meaning. Not only do we see animals as something to
own
or to serve us, but even in art they are used as an
extension of ourselves."
A committed vegetarian, Julia has
raised her daughter and son as vegetarians. Originally from
Nelson, she moved to the South Coast 5 years go and
is
now a confirmed Wellingtonian. She lives in Houghton
Bay with her two children and their dog, Pudding.
"daddy went a hunting" runs from April 19th to the 26th at Thistle Hall - top of Cuba Street, Wellington
