Theatre Royal Gala Opening Celebration

Theatre Royal Gala Opening Celebration

In the 1800s Nelsonians packed the Theatre Royal to see acrobats, theatre and opera – and now the historic theatre is all set to go again, this time with an opening concert by Fat Freddy’s Drop.

Tickets go on sale next week for the Gala Opening Celebration, which Theatre Establishment Manager Guy Boyce says has been pitched to maximise audience appeal.

“We’re celebrating the historic theatre reopening to the public as a modern performance venue, so we wanted to reach the different audiences that will use the Theatre Royal for the next 100 years,” he said. “We start with Fat Freddy’s Drop for the contemporary rock audience, we have Circus of Horrors for the late night cabaret crowd, there is hot young Irish band Beoga for Celtic music fans, top New Zealand work Tama Ma for those who love dance, a jazz concert, a few other treats and the Gala Variety Concert that kicks the whole thing off.”

Mr Boyce said people who had supported the theatre by sponsoring seats would be able to make preferential bookings from Thursday this week, while public bookings will open next Wednesday (April 21). He said there were still seats available for sponsorship, from $750, and the theatre will also be launching a Royal Family.

“There is a huge amount of affection and support in Nelson for the Theatre Royal and we want to tap into this with the Royal Family,” he explained, “Not everyone can sponsor a seat, but for $35 you can join the Royal Family and get many benefits in ticket prices, as well as being able to join our team of ushers who will get complimentary tickets to shows.”

The Theatre Royal Gala Opening Celebration runs from May 31 – June 9.
More information about the programme, ticket sales and the Royal Family are available at www.theatreroyalnelson.co.nz . Tickets will be on sale at Everyman in Hardy St.
