Queer Film Lovers Get Ready to take Your Seats

Queer Film Lovers Get Ready to take Your Seats for the 2010 Out Takes Film Festival

Coming to Auckland audiences May 27th - June 2nd and Wellington audiences June 3rd – 9th. This year’s programme boasts big names, big budgets and quality productions; all hand picked by the Out Takes event organisers, Reel Queer Incorporated. From documentaries to comedies, short films to thought provoking features the Out Takes 2010: A Reel Queer Film Festival has a film for every discerning fan.

This is the 16th year the film festival has run with each event gaining a wider audience and following. Out Takes showcases the trials, tribulations and triumphs of queer issues in a variety of genres helped along by a bit of Hollywood eye candy (Robert Pattinson) high rating documentaries, and oh-so-stylish films such as We Are the Mods.

“We are really focussing on quality features this year” says Out Takes Chief Programmer Simon Fulton. “We have the first ever New Zealand cinematic screening of the big-budget period drama Little Ashes featuring Twilight star Robert Pattinson; love stories shot in the queer nightlife of Athens like Strella; and comedic feel-good films like Drool, also featuring Mulholland Drive’s Laura Harring.”

People with a passion for New Zealand queer cinema aren’t missing out either. Richard O’Brien, the man who wrote The Rocky Horror Picture Show, gives an entertaining insight into his life, and Christopher Banks returns after last year’s success, Teddy with a new short film, Communication, already booked to play in several festivals worldwide and is having its U.S. premiere in April. Plus a number of the international and national Directors will be in attendance at the festival.

The Opening Night film and party in Auckland is the 27th of May at Rialto Cinema featuring ‘And Then Came Lola’ and ‘An Englishman in New York’. Wellington’s Opening Night and Party is June 3rd at the Paramount Theatre with ‘An Englishman in New York’ plus there’s the Lesbian Gala film and party on June 6th with ‘And Then Came Lola.’ These events sold out last year and are expected to again in 2010.

Out Takes 2010 is presented by a non-profit group of queer volunteers, Reel Queer Incorporated who have been organising New Zealand's annual queer film festival - Out Takes - since 1995. Reel Queer Inc aims to bring an annual showcase of films that reflect the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, takatāpui and intersex communities to cinemas in New Zealand’s largest cities.

Festival programmes will be available from May 1 at queer-friendly venues and businesses in Auckland and Wellington. Tickets for the films and Opening Nights are on sale May 3 from the respective cinemas with single and six-trip passes available.
