Renowned NZ artist staging solo exhibition of new work
Well-known New Zealand artist Tony Ogle’s first solo exhibition in a
number of years, an exclusive collection of new original
works, is opening at Flagstaff Gallery in Auckland later
this month.
Tony, who has been painting New Zealand
landscapes for 18 years and achieved both commercial and
critical success with his work, is in the final stages of
mounting his first solo exhibition in five years.
New
Trails, a collection of new original works depicting
various coastal scenes, opens at Flagstaff
Gallery in Devonport, Auckland on 20 May and runs until
22 June.
The eye-catching works in the exhibition were all inspired by Tony’s fascination with the unique landscape qualities of some of his favourite locations around New Zealand, including beaches in two parts of the country that are embroiled in the current mining debate - Great Barrier Island and the Coromandel Peninsula.
Tony, who in recent years has focused on group exhibitions, says New Trails showcases a number of works on board and canvas the painter and printmaker has created in the new studio he has set up since moving last year with his family from Auckland ‘s Bethells Beach to Wainui Beach near Gisborne.
"The challenge for me as an artist is to heighten the existing visual properties of places to create a compelling work for myself and the viewers of my work,” he says.
His ability to successfully do so has been built up through years of hard work and a life-long preoccupation with New Zealand's great outdoors, achieved by someone who is both in synch and fully entrenched in the lifestyle and beach life of New Zealand.
