It’s A Tree!
It’s A Tree!
Announcing a new knit art installation at the New Dowse
After a period of relative quiet, Wellington’s original knit graffiti group are once more challenging perceptions of knitting and craft.
‘OutdoorKnit has enjoyed whole-hearted support from Craft2.0 and the New Dowse since we began, and so we felt it was time to give something substantial back,’ says Tash Barneveld, aka Knitsch.
‘The knitted tree idea had been floating around in my brain for some time. After a bit of consultation with Sue Tyler of Craft2.0 and the New Dowse, it was decided that June was the perfect time to do a big project.’
The premise of ‘It’s a Tree’ is pretty simple. OutdoorKnit is putting the call out to crafters nationwide to contribute knitted or crocheted flowers, leaves and native birds. ‘It’s a Tree’ was installed on the 12th of May, with regular additions leading up to Craft2.0 on June 12. Appropriately, the winter edition of Craft2.0 coincides with World Wide Knit in Public Day, an international celebration of knit and crochet.
OutdoorKnit was established in Wellington in 2008 with the intention of challenging the stereotypes associated with knitting. Armed with needles and yarn, Knitsch and stiX have been adorning various urban landscapes with knitted and woven works. The pair have been responsible for the ‘It will all be ok’ fence on Buckle Street and the affectionally named ‘Heart Fence’ on Vivian Street, along with minor works all over the world.
Tash Barneveld, aka Knitsch, has turned her pseudonym into a hand dyed yarn brand that is proudly New Zealand made and based in Lower Hutt.
