American Comedian and Filmmaker Comes to Wellingto

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 30th 2010

American Comedian and Filmmaker Comes to Wellington for the 2010 Out Takes Film Festival

With less than a week until opening night, the Out Takes Reel Queer Film Festival is pleased to announce the attendance of Californian filmmaker, Lauren Palmigiano.

Famous in her own country for her part in the comedic website “Funny or Die,” and fresh from the Tribeca Film Festival in New York and winning the audience appreciation award at the Santa Cruz Film Festival in California, Lauren is coming to Wellington to support her short romantic-comedy Cried Suicide.

Lauren says Cried Suicide is comedic take on a tragic subject rarely talked about, using humour to break down the barriers of understanding.

“I write comedy, but I tend to write things based in some kind of sad situation and try to turn that into something funny. For this short, I wanted to do something about someone feeling really, really desperate and the ridiculous things we do when we're feeling that hurt. Although Cried Suicide sounds very serious, it's pretty silly,” says Lauren.

The silliness comes in the form of Los Angelinos attempting to console a friend who supposedly attempted suicide. The only problem is that she faked it - to get back the woman she loves - and she isn’t telling. Sarah Burns, the star of big budget Hollywood comedy I Love You, Man, plays one of the lead roles.

Simon Fulton, the chief programmer of the Out Takes Reel Queer Film Festival says it’s extremely rare for an international film director to make time to come to New Zealand for the festival.

“Lauren is obviously a gifted and very funny woman – taking a very serious subject and making us understand the pain and emotion through humour. We are so lucky to have her come to Wellington and present her film,” says Simon.

Lauren will attend both screenings of Cried Suicide at the Paramount Theatre. The film precedes another Los Angeles-based dramatic film, We are the Mods, on Friday 4th June at 8:30pm and Saturday 5th June at 12:30pm.
