My Penina, a Pacific dance theatre work

Press Release:

My Penina, a Pacific dance theatre work

My Penina, my pearl; smooth, lustrous and variously coloured. Pacific Dance New Zealand in association with DANZ (Dance Aotearoa New Zealand) and the Edge presents – My Penina (August 2nd – 7th at The Edge).

Winner of “Best Play” and “Hottest New Thing” at the 2003 Fringe New Zealand Awards, My Penina is back, returned and reworked, bringing together some of New Zealand’s most vibrant Pacific Islands talent.

This is a play with a difference, taking the audience into the world beyond theatre in the Western tradition, intermixing dance and song to bring you “Pacific dance theatre.”

A universal story of love, family and a lifetime lived together this is the story of Aniva and Pelenato, which they share on their 50thwedding anniversary.

The play written by and starring Fiona Collins (Vula, Awhi Tapu and starring as Aniva) also features the tremendous talents of Aleni Tufuga (The Songmakers Chair, The Market, Sione’s Wedding, The Tatooist and also playing Pelenato) and Iaheto Ah Hi (Sione’s Wedding, The Market, A Frigate Bird Sings, Dawn Raids and Naked Samoans).

My Penina also offers the vision of "Kila Kokonut Krew" and "Pani and Pani" starlet Anapela Polataivao as she shows her talents as a director in her directorial debut.

Consider yourself invited into the fale of this aged couple as they tell stories spanning some 70 years.

My Penina is the first major production produced by Pacific Dance New Zealand and showcases the talents of My Penina choreographer Justin Haiu (Lion King, The Arrival, So You Think You Can Dance) as he brings the vision of Pacific dance theatre to life and form.

My Penina - these are her words, his dance, her song and his art...

Date: Monday August 2nd - Saturday August 7th
Venue: The Edge - STAMP Season

This is a Pacific dance theatre work proudly supported by Auckland City Council Arts Alive, Creative New Zealand, DANZ (Dance Aotearoa New Zealand), Pacific Media Network and Pacific Dance New Zealand.
