Computer Clubhouse movement connects to world

Nation-wide Computer Clubhouse movement connects to the world

For the very first time Computer Clubhouse in NZ is able to send two teams of Kiwi youth to a global teen technology summit in the USA.

Friends and families will farewell three members from the Enderley Clubhouse (Hamilton) and three members from Clubhouse 274 (Auckland), with their chaperones at Auckland International Airport this Saturday as they travel to Boston, Massachusetts to attend the Intel Computer Clubhouse Network’s 2010 Teen Summit, “Mobilize, Act, Inspire! “

From 27July to 01August, these NZ youth leaders will join nearly 300 other Computer Clubhouse members--ages 13 to 18, from 20 countries including Russia, Jordan, Israel, South Africa, Palestine, India, Brazil, and the United States--to share ideas, learn new skills, and work together on projects that address socially conscious challenges such as reducing urban violence and improving the environment.

Computer Clubhouse in New Zealand currently has five Computer Clubhouses operating across the country and is part of a digitally connected learning community launched by the Prime Minister in March this year. This Teen Summit delegation once again includes members from the flagship Clubhouse 274, and for the first time, members from Enderley Clubhouse.

Potential delegates submit projects that are put through a rigorous peer evaluation which results in a shortlist of recommendations. Finalists are selected by mentors and staff of the individual Clubhouses.

When asked what the trip means to her community, Enderley member, Shayna Hemopo, 17, said “We get to show other people who we are and how we do things in our culture. It means everything to my family…me going on this trip.” Jacob Miringa, 15, also from Enderley said, “I’m looking forward to flying and experiencing the world. I’ve never left New Zealand before.”

Clubhouse 274 Coordinator, Keu Iorangi said “The Teen Summit is an awesome experience for members and mentors to be amongst hundreds of people from around the world all with our creative caps on, and the Clubhouse 274 delegation are keen to share as much as we can with everyone.” Nathaniel Tohovaka is excited and has great expectations about the adventure. “I hope to have a greater world view after this trip, and be able to share it with my fellow Clubhouse members when I return home. Teen Summit is probably one of the greatest things I shall ever do”.
