New film work by Nova Paul at City Gallery Wellington
If you are suffering from celluloid withdrawal after the New Zealand International Film Festival be sure to pay a trip to City Gallery Wellington where there will be a special chance to catch New Zealand filmmaker Nova Paul’s most recent film This is Not Dying from 10 August to 5 September 2010.
An opening screening of this film will be held 6pm Monday 9 August in the Adam Auditorium, to give audiences the exclusive chance to experience This is Not Dying in its original 16mm format.
Nova Paul was selected by City Gallery Wellington as the New Zealand contribution to the international Art in the Auditorium series, a rotating programme of video art involving ten major international galleries. Over the past year, these galleries, including the Whitechapel Gallery in London, have used their auditorium spaces to exhibit contemporary video works.
Paul’s film is brand new. It will have its inaugural screening at the 2010 New Zealand International Film Festival and City Gallery Wellington is fortunate enough to be the second venue. After the initial one-off screening in 16mm format it will be shown daily on DVD in the Adam Auditorium until Sunday 5 September.
Paul uses the early cinematic technique of three-colour separation to make her exquisite films. This is Not Dying follows the daily life around Paul’s mārae, Maungarongo, at Poroiti. Simple moments are rendered surreal by the ripples of colour surrounding bodies, light, and movement.
The soundtrack, an improvised Ngā Puhi love song, was created directly in response to the film by kaumatua and the celebrated New Zealand showband figure Ben Tawhiti.
Nova Paul (b.1973, Aotearoa New Zealand) is a filmmaker of Te Uri Ro Roi and Te Parawhau /Ngā Puhi descent. She is currently a Senior Lecturer at AUT University teaching art theory and moving image in the Visual Arts Department.
