Media Release 3/8/2010:
Ahi Kaa: Through Our
Eyes- A Digital Photography Exhibition by Ngati Porou
East Coast Students, August 6 to 20th.
“Ahi
Kaa: Through Our Eyes”. A digital photography exhibition
by Ngati Porou East Coast students opens this Friday
6th August at 6pm at Toihoukura, a leading Maori art
institute located in Gisborne.
This
inaugural exhibition features exciting new digital art works
by rangatahi from Ngati Porou East Coast secondary schools.
The images are the students’ visual interpretation of the
kaupapa Ahi Kaa, as seen from their own perspective. One of
the stunning digital photographs selected for the exhibition
can be viewed on the invitation
attachment.
The exhibition is curated by Steve
Gibbs, principal tutor of Toihoukura, and organised by E
Tipu E Rea (ETER) — the Te Runanga o Ngati Porou/Ministry
of Education Partnership.
The images selected for the
exhibition are the artistic creations of rangatahi attending
secondary schools within the Ngati Porou rohe: Tolaga Bay
Area School, Kuranui, Ngata Memorial College, Te Kura
Kaupapa Maori o Te Waiu o Ngati Porou, and Te Kura Kaupapa
Maori o Kawakawa Mai Tawhiti.
“Ahi Kaa”
loosely translates as “People who keep the home fires
burning.” The students participating in the exhibition
have interpreted this theme through multi-faceted
perspectives. The images reflect not only the world they
inhabit, but also their understanding of their place within
it.
The exhibition is supported by : Te Runanga o Ngati
Porou, Ministry of Education, Toihoukura, UNESCO NZ &
Creative
Communities.
