Scape 2010 Critical Writing Workshop Participants

Announcing the Scape 2010 Critical Writing Workshop Participants
SCAPE 2010 CRITICAL WRITING WORKSHOP 23 SEPTEMBER

SCAPE 2010 will feature a busy Opening Weekend of events, and to mark SCAPE’s dedication to the future of contemporary critical art writing we are holding the SCAPE 2010 Critical Writing Workshopon Thursday 23 September. The workshop will provide an opportunity for each participant to develop their writing practice and gain further insight into the field of contemporary art writing. The workshop is made available through the generous sponsorship of Creative New Zealand and Goethe-Institutto New Zealand art writers who have a clear interest in contemporary art and critical discourse.

SCAPE 2010 has provided scholarships for two emerging writers, Jaenine Parkinson (Director Blue Oyster Art Project Space, Dunedin) and Kate Brettkelly-Chalmers (Writer and Academic) to participate in our one day writing workshop alongside eight established and early career contemporary art writers. Both scholarship recipients presented stellar writing samples to the selection committee and will bring fresh interests to the workshop. All participants of our Critical Writing Workshop will contribute to our new interactive SCAPE blog in our UNFAMILIAR: a critical look at SCAPE section - reflecting on the artworks, talks and events over the opening weekend.

In addition to the participation of our two scholarship recipients, the Critical Writing Workshop will feature the unique perspectives and interests of Stephen Cleland (Curator, Te Tuhi Centre for the Arts); Abby Cunnane (Curator, Hirschfeld Gallery / Assistant Curator, City Gallery Wellington); Barbara Garrie (Editor, Oculus Journal); Kate Montgomery (Outgoing Director, The Physics Room, Christchurch/Newly Appointed Senior Curator, City Gallery Wellington); Melanie Oliver (Independent Art Writer and Curator); Laura Preston (Assistant Curator, Adam Art Gallery), Andrew Paul Wood (Art Critic and Academic) and Anna-Marie White (Curator, The Suter Art Gallery).

Bringing together the range of interests of these contemporary art writers workshop facilitator Vanessa Joan Mueller will discuss and examine critical writing. Mueller is the current Director of Dusseldorf Kunstverein and a well-known international curator. Born in Hamburg in 1968, Mueller studied art history and film theory at Bochum University and holds a PhD in art history. From 2000 to 2005 she was curator at Frankfurt Kunstverein, where she co-curated exhibitions such as non-places (2002), New Heimat (2001) and Adorno. The possibility of the impossible (co-curated with Nicolaus Schafhausen, 2004).

From 2005 to 2007 she was deputy director of the project European Kunsthalle in Cologne, a virtual art space exploring potential models for a new art institution. She devised a programme of lectures and events entitled Under Construction and co-curated an art-in-public-space exhibition called Models for Tomorrow.

Recent exhibitions she has curated as Director of Dusseldorf Kunstverein include solo shows by Gerard Byrne, Blinky Palermo (together with Kunsthalle Dusseldorf), Ulla von Brandenburg, Ian Wallace, and Florian Pumhoesl, as well as group shows like Words and Things (Christopher Williams, Annette Kelm, Susanne Kriemann and others), The Perception of Ideas leads to New Ideas (Bernadette Corporation, Jonathan Monk, Joachim Koester, Mario Garcia Torres, Ian Foryth / Jane Pollard and others), and Dance in My Experience (Tom Burr, Claire Fontaine, Manon de Boer, Josephine Meckseper, Aleksandra Mir and others).

Numerous publications on contemporary art and art theory confirm her position as a curator with a strong interest in contemporary art and its social and philosophical contexts.
