Greg Johnson to release new album by fan power!

Greg Johnson to release new album by fan power!

With the rapid change in music technologies and music marketing world-wide, Kiwi singer-songwriter Greg Johnson has announced plans to release his ninth studio album under his own steam by asking fans to contribute to the recording and marketing costs of the record, pre-ordering the album four months ahead of its release.

In return, depending on the level of investment, fans can pre purchase a signed copy of the album – Secret Weapon – delivered one week ahead of commercial release, get an instant download of an acoustic nine track album of some of Greg’s perennial fan favourite songs, exclusive member only downloads, access his website to hear music as it is created right through to top end executive producer status with, amongst other incentives, a theme song written for an answer phone or cell phone.

With four different packages for fans to choose from, there’s something for everyone at $30 (Standard), $50 (Deluxe), $300 (Super Deluxe) and $3000 (Executive Producer Version).

Johnson, still based in Los Angeles is excited by the prospect of this relatively new to NZ music marketing initiative, released under his own label JMA.

“I was proud to be on the same label as the Beatles, Stones, Radiohead, Coldplay and countless other greats. It’s all different now, for many reasons, mostly economic and as a result of new technologies.”

“The good news is that the same new technologies that have up-ended the old industry have also made it possible to record cheaply, still keep high production values and to connect with your fan-base if you’re lucky enough to have one already”.

The album, which is still in the recording stages, will be released in the first half of November. The first fruit of these recording sessions, The Way I Feel, will be released to radio this week and is also available to listen to off Greg’s website.

Greg says he was interested in breaking down the hurdles between artist, music and fans:

“I knew that the time was right and the technology is available to deal directly with my fans. It’s also allows me total control of my music and means that, should you choose to get involved, you will have the chance to hear songs as they are created and watch me in my studio via the videos I post.”

“It's great to be on the cutting edge in the music business rather than complaining about how the world has changed. I'm totally amped to be an indie again and in charge of my own destiny. I’m really excited to try the new model for music and I’ve tried to make the packages exciting for fans and something I would want to own myself.”

Fans can listen to the new single The Way I Feel and pre-order the new album Secret Weapon from Greg’s website www.gregjohnsonmusic.com
