Wellington writers respond to Ready to Roll

When writers and artists get together there are bound to be sparks. City Gallery Wellington invited eight Wellington-based writers to respond to the work of a particular artist in the Gallery’s current exhibition Ready to Roll (29 May-12 September 2010). The writers –Pip Adam, Airini Beautrais, James Brown, Tim Corballis, Chloe Lane, Anna Livesey, Bill Nelson and Lucy Orbell –will read their work at a special evening, entitled The Sparks Fly Upwards, in the Adam Auditorium, at 6pm on Wednesday 18 August.

The title for this event is taken from Elliot Collins’ enormous wall painting,The End and/or the Beginning (2010), currently installed in the City Gallery’s Hancock Gallery. Ready to Roll, curated by Heather Galbraith, is an exhibition of eight contemporary New Zealand artists – Matt Hunt, Eddie Clemens, Layla Rudneva-Mackay, Elliot Collins, Campbell Patterson, Richard Maloy, Kushana Bush and Zina Swanson –whose work represents a selective snapshot of the breadth of current art, in its various media and concerns, happening in this country.

The texts these writers have produced are interestingly diverse and reveal much about the complicated intersection of art, art writing, criticism, and creative writing. We invite audiences to come and hear the writers read their work and consider their re-interpretations of Ready to Roll.

A small but exquisite publication of the collected writings has been designed by Paul Neason, one half of Wellington-based design and animation duo National Park, and will be available to purchase on the evening.
