Gallery Wellington announces the appointment of Kate
Montgomery as Senior Curator
City Gallery Wellington is excited to welcome Kate Montgomery as the Gallery’s new Senior Curator. Relocating from Christchurch, Montgomery takes up her new position at City Gallery Wellington next week.
Since 2007 Montgomery has been the Director of The Physics Room, a contemporary art project space in Christchurch. Here she managed a varied programme of exhibitions and events by a host of artists, writers, musicians, and academics, from both New Zealand and further afield.
Montgomery says, “Coming from the dynamism of a project space background with a dedication to artist-led initiatives, I’m particularly excited to have the opportunity of working with the team at City Gallery to continue to foster timely and compelling contributions to the broader discussion of art, artists, audiences and the interrelation of all three.”
Director of City Gallery Wellington, Paula Savage, says “Kate Montgomery has played an integral role in Christchurch’s contemporary art scene, supporting and developing artists’ projects and contributing to critical dialogue. We are delighted to welcome Kate to the capital and City Gallery Wellington, and look forward to the commitment, innovation and acumen she will contribute to our curatorial programming.”
As well as her work at The Physics Room, Montgomery has a strong background as an art critic and writer. She has been a regular contributor to Art New Zealand and The Press and has written texts for a variety of visual art publications and catalogues. She also served for a number of years on the Board of Trustees of High Street Project, New Zealand’s oldest artist-run space, located in central Christchurch.
