Auckland celebrates International Day of the Older Person
In celebration of International Day of the
Older Person on 1 October, a variety of free activities for
seniors are being offered at community centres, libraries,
recreation centres and other venues across Auckland
city.
International Day of the Older Person is a United Nations initiative that provides an opportunity for local communities to come together to acknowledge and celebrate the contribution older people make to society.
“Recognising and valuing older people for their diverse experiences, wisdom, knowledge and contribution to society is an important element of creating healthy and strong communities,” says Councillor Paul Goldsmith, chairperson of the council’s Community Services Committee
This is the third year that Auckland City Council has worked together with Age Concern, the Auckland District Health Board, the Order of St John - St John Caring Caller Service, Outreach Therapy Pets and Bupa to deliver a diverse programme of free activities to mark this special occasion.
There are more than 30 activities on offer across Auckland city. From morning teas to aqua aerobics, there is sure to be something to appeal to everyone.
Highlights of this year’s programme include an afternoon tea with Dame Catherine Tizard at the Leys Institute Library in Ponsonby, a two-hour introduction to the internet at AUT University (leaving from Orakei Community Centre) and a prime time concert in Onehunga.
From Ponsonby to Panmure, Avondale to Otahuhu, there are numerous informative workshops, exercise classes and performances taking place on or around 1 October.
