Providence Is Here

Providence Is Here

I’m at a loss something’s in here I’m just not smart enough to tell you what it is that will quell the hysteria coming out your mouth”

We Should Practice presents Providence, a new work by Louise Tu’u. Raw, ambiguous and quietly deafening, Providence plays old videos, writes letters to the audience and is a spectator in its own work. Maybe.

Inspired by Auckland’s homeless communities, Providence defies assumptions about the "derries" or derelicts that inhabit a lot of shelters, inner-city shop fronts and deserted alleys around Central Auckland.

With Regan Taylor (This Is Not My Life, Flintlock Musket) and Lara Fischel-Chisholm (The Continental Monologues: Africa, Sexy Recession Show), the world of Providence is complete with sound and set design by Chris O’Connor (SJD, Seven Sisters) & Nooroa Tapuni (Glitch, Re-trieved).

In 2005, playwright, actor and director Louise Tu’u was the first New Zealand playwright to be awarded the Royal Court International Theatre Residency in London. Presenting her first play, Le Tauvaga (The Competition) in 2004 led her to continue writing and directing a number of short films. Louise also initiated the community walk/dance off production in 2009 ‘To Fergusson with Love’ in Oranga, Auckland. Providence is her second play.

As eight councils become unified, the populace looks on, wondering when Providence will come to them.
