Open City Flying Nun takes over City Gallery Wellington

It is starting to feel like summer is on the horizon and City Gallery Wellington is celebrating with another in the Gallery’s series of late-night events, Open City, on Thursday 14 October 6 to 10pm.

October’s Open City event has a Flying Nun theme. Founder of the iconic label Roger Shepherd was invited by art collector David Teplitzky to collate a 24-hour song cycle for City Gallery Wellington’s current exhibition roundabout°, which is drawn from Teplizky’s collection. Rising to this task, Shepherd enlisted over four hundred bands to form a comprehensive set list of music that has had a personal influence on him over the course of his life in the music industry.

The Open City evening takes Shepherd’s work, 48,000 Revolutions, as a starting point for a series of presentations and performances. The evening will begin with Mark Williams, Exhibitions Coordinator at the New Zealand Film Archive and experimental music enthusiast, and Roger Shepherd in conversation about the history of Flying Nun and the future of the label in New Zealand’s music industry.

This conversation will be followed by an audio-visual presentation from musician Jed Town. Town is a member of experimental band Fetus Productions and will present a history of his work up to the present day. The event will be capped off by a performance from Flying Nun’s most recent signing, the enormously talented Grayson Gilmour. Gilmour recently released his fifth full-length album No Constellation to critical acclaim.
