Bikes and boutiques join for Frocktober fashion event

Frocks on Bikes: October 15, 2010

Bikes and fashion may not seem like natural companions but in the cycling capitals of the world stylish commuters on comfy metro-cycles flock to the CBD every day.

To bring some of that glamour to the streets of our own capital and promote cycling as a sustainably stylish transport option, Frocks on Bikes is bringing you a fashion show like Wellington has never seen before.

‘Wheel Stylish’ will showcase the magic that happens when you bring together gorgeous local fashion, Wellington women and beautiful bikes.

The event is being held this Saturday, 16 October at 2.30pm, in the Atrium of the BNZ Harbour Quays building on the waterfront. A pre-show promenade will leave ‘Solace in the Wind’ (the leaning man sculpture by Te Papa) at 2pm and everybody’s invited to join for the waterfront cruise to the venue.

Wellington singer, Lisa Tomlins, will MC the event, which will feature local fashion designers, Starfish, Voon, KowTow, Emma and De Nada as well as vintage boutique, Hunters and Collectors. Stylish urban bikes are being provided by Mamachari and R&R Sport and there'll be drinks and nibbles on offer.

Co-organiser, Isabella Cawthorn, says Frocks on Bikes is about fostering a culture of cycling and showing it can be fashionable and accessible. “We want to show that cycling is a convenient, fun and even stylish option. It can be really social; it’s good for the environment and great for your wallet.”

Frocks on Bikes spontaneously emerged in Wellington in the lead up to the 2008 350 Climate Action festivals. Since then hundreds of fashionably-dressed women on bikes have begun appearing in our cities, demonstrating that cycling is a fun, stylish and sustainable way to get about.

While Wellington is hosting the ‘Wheel Stylish’ fashion show, events,  from rides to picnics and tea parties with cup cakes and bubbly, are being held all over the country to celebrate Frocktober.
