Boy, What A Winner! Kiwi Film Takes First Place In
Whitcoulls Top DVD List

Kiwi film Boy has taken out the honours in the new Whitcoulls DVD TOP 50 list, announced today.

Taika Waititi’s award-winning movie saw off blockbusters like Avatar, Lord Of The Rings and The Dark Knight, to claim first place on the list of New Zealanders’ favourite DVDs.

More than a third of the films on the latest list are new, including Boy and second place-getter Avatar, with New Zealand movies making a very strong showing.

“The list shows just how vibrant the New Zealand film industry is and it’s fantastic to see Kiwis embracing those movies so enthusiastically,” says Whitcoulls marketing manager Catherine Collins.

“We have Boy at No 1, the Lord Of The Rings trilogy at No 6, The World’s Fastest Indian at No 26 and by Whale Rider at No 27. Avatar, some of which was filmed here, is at No 2 and District 9, which also has a strong Kiwi connection, enters the list at No 42.”

Other new entrants include subtitled film The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo at No 5 and The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas at No 17. The Toy Story series came in at No 11 while Sandra Bullock’s Oscar-winning turn in The Blind Side saw it enter the list at No 16.

Last year’s winner Mamma Mia has dropped to No 8 but blokes’ favourite The Shawshank Redemption hung in there at No 3, down just one. Pretty Woman suffered the biggest drop, falling from 8 to 33.

Action flicks made a strong showing with The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy up one to 6, the Star Wars series up one to 16 and The Dark Knight up from 24 to 12.
