Vegas Showgirl Meets Lady Macbeth in Ötaki Exhibition
Photo Opportunity: 6th & 7th November 2010, The Civic Theatre Building, 16 Main Street, Ötaki
Ötaki jewellery designer Eve Gilliland will be holding a small exhibition of her ‘Evegil’ range of bespoke jewellery and accessories in the cobweb-festooned remains of the art deco Civic Theatre shop to coincide with the Kāpiti Coast Arts trail on the 6th and 7th November.
Eve will be showcasing a small range of pieces that combine the decadence of a Shakespearean drama with the haute couture skills she gained working at London’s most prestigious costume jewellery firm ‘Erickson Beamon’ in the late 1990s.
Awarded the ‘Booker-Spalding First Time Entrant Award’ for her piece “Something Wicked This Way Comes” at the recent Montana World of WearableArt awards, Eve has decided to combine her background designing sumptuous pieces for designers as diverse as Christian Lacroix, Dries Van Noten, Emanuel Ungaro and Alexander McQueen with her degrees in industrial design and English literature, gained at Wellington’s Victoria University in 2005 and 2009 respectively.
This creative blend is responsible for a heady mix of large, crystal-encrusted pieces that would fit enticingly upon the couture catwalks of Paris, alongside armour-like creations that wouldn’t be out of place adorning an ancient warrior goddess. As Eve says “It’s Vegas showgirl meets Lady Macbeth” and she has no qualms about showing in a small town “It feels like the right place to do it, I don’t feel constrained to be in a large city to make or show these pieces. This is where I’m from and where I choose to live and work. The space is scruffy-as, but no one will be looking at the peeling paint and grungy carpet.”
After working in a range of diverse creative fields over the years; from 3D cad draughting for a super yacht interiors firm, to tutoring at the Victoria Architecture and Design Schools, Eve feels like she has returned to her roots, explaining “I’ve always been a very hands-on designer, preferring to make things than draw them, the WOW show was a great platform to really push myself and get back into the fields of jewellery and accessory design. It may seem foolhardy to start a business that could be perceived as frivolous, but when times are hard, people still have a real appreciation for precious items that will become tomorrow’s heirlooms. These pieces will be my legacy.”
Evegil is the fledgling jewellery and accessories company of designer Eve Gilliland who specialises in making couture-quality one-off jewellery and accessory pieces.
