8 November 2010 – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Award-winning Kiwi short film comes to DVD

The award-winning New Zealand short film ‘Communication’ will be released on DVD and digital download next Monday 15 November, following a tide of international acclaim.

The film, which tells the story of a young Jewish man’s love affair with a male teacher three times his age, has screened in festivals around the world in 2010 and won two international awards.

"This poignant, moving New Zealand short struck all the right sombre notes and was a fitting winner of this year's Best Dramatic Short Q Award,” says Todd Camp, director of the Fort Worth International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival. “’Communication’ is proof that director Christopher Banks is a talent to watch. We can't wait to see what he does next."

The film’s acting was also singled out for praise. “’Communication’ successfully navigates the complexities of human relationships in a manner that is neither pandering nor pedantic,” says James Nadeau, director of the Boston LGBT Film Festival. “The film is well paced with actors Rudi Vodanovich, Alexander Campbell and Richard Lambeth expertly conveying the difficult emotional barriers that often lead to mis-communications.”

Festival directors around the world have praised ‘Communication’ for the depth and scope of its story, which clocks in at 19 minutes. Jim Carl, director of the North Carolina Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, described it as “one of the best shorts of the year”, adding that “‘Communication’ is a short drama that doesn't just delight but – unlike so many LGBT features – actually delivers.”

Christian Martin, writer and director of “Release” and “Shank”, the most successful British gay independent film of the last decade, said:

“’Communication’ beautifully observes the first steps that many of us have taken along the path to coming to terms with our own identity and sexuality. It neatly ties in themes of religion and the complications of unrequited love between two men years apart in age. It also packs the punch of feature film into the medium of a short with an efficiency that will move you long after the credits have ended. "

‘Communication’ was produced by Number 8 Films, a charitable film-making trust which promotes growth within and community awareness of film-making culture in New Zealand. The film is a follow-up to last year’s short ‘Teddy’, which also won awards and screened at festivals in London, Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York and Toronto.

Producer Andy Jalfon says the release of ‘Communication’ on DVD has been highly anticipated. “We like to make stories about the sorts of characters that you don’t often see on screen – the untold stories, basically. The response we’ve had both locally and internationally to our pre-sales online show that this film has really struck a chord.”
