26 artists vie for national small sculpture prize

The Waiheke Community Art Gallery ’s second exhibition in New Zealand for Small Sculpture and National Small Sculpture Prize will open on 28 January.

This national exhibition and $3000 prize is for small, freestanding or wall sculpture under 800mm. It will complement the gallery’s major biennial outdoor sculpture exhibition headland Sculpture on the Gulf, which also opens on Friday 28 January.

Guest selector and judge for the 2011 Small Sculpture Prize, is Dr Peter Shand, Senior Lecturer at the University of Auckland . Peter has reviewed over 100 entries and selected 26 for exhibition.

“We are delighted to be staging this national exhibition and prize of $3000, said gallery director Linda Chalmers “Artists from all parts of New Zealand are represented in the exhibition. It also brings a synergy between Headland and the Gallery and provides the perfect opportunity for sculptors who work on a smaller scale to showcase their work at the same time as our high-profile outdoor event.

Also featuring at the gallery during this time will be maquettes by Headland Sculpture on the Gulf artists.

“The opportunity to view these events will make for a great summer’s day out on Waiheke Island ”, said Linda Chalmers
