Media Release

Shiraz, Sunshine And Superannuation Top List of What the Aussies Do Better

Fair Dinkum! Kiwis accept that Aussies are better at barbeques, red wine, cricket and government initiatives shows a survey commissioned by South Australian winemakers, Taylors Wines.

To celebrate Australia Day (Wednesday 26 January), more than 500 New Zealanders were questioned on what our trans-Tasman rivals are better at, and found out what Kiwis firmly believe they’re superior at.

When it comes to patriotic dishes, 69% of Kiwis are willing to give bragging rights to the Aussies for cooking up the best shrimp on the barbie. However, we still think Kiwis whip up the best lamingtons (85%), ANZAC biscuits (87%), meat pies (89%) and fish and chips (91%) respectively.

The survey also revealed that Aussie winemakers are red hot favourites for their Shiraz (78%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (61%) varieties. But when it comes to Sauvignon Blanc, 97% of Kiwis remain loyal to New Zealand made.

In the sporting arena, Kiwis think the Aussies are leading the way with swimming (72%) and cricket (66%), and about even with rugby league (51%). However New Zealanders are still backing black for rugby, with a whopping 97% of respondents believing that they have the better rugby players.

The top picks for the things Kiwis would most like to ‘steal’ from the Aussies were the Great Barrier Reef (57%), climate (37%), theme parks (36%), Myer and David Jones department stores (34%), supermodel Elle McPherson (33%) and the Emirates Melbourne Cup (30%).

Mitchell Taylor, Managing Director of Taylors Wines says the survey results are a “tongue-in-cheek way of celebrating our Trans-Tasman rivalry in the lead up to Australia Day this Wednesday 26 January”.

“We have always enjoyed a great relationship with our Kiwi cousins, not only with their support of Taylors Wines, but also as an industry with a lot of knowledge and technology sharing.”

Lara Hoye NZ Market Manager for Taylors Wines, says “the survey results reveal what many Kiwis secretly believe the Aussies are better at, but may be too afraid to admit in public”.

“We were surprised by the number of things that Kiwis were willing to admit their Aussie counterparts are better at, so we’re hoping that this Australia Day both nations can celebrate all great things Australian in one way or another.”

The survey also delved into more serious topics, with respondents asked which government initiatives the Aussies do better. More than 59% of people voted for the Australian Superannuation scheme, 57% for paid parental leave and the ‘baby bonus’, and 49% for tax rates.

More than 45% of Kiwis also said that they would cross the ditch to join the Aussies, while 22% were unsure about making the move.
