New releases mark fifth different decade for boutique vineyard
Philip and Janey Walsh started growing grapes in the Seventies, contributing to wines of the time as contract growers throughout the Eighties and Nineties. In the first decade of the new millennium, Philip suffered a debilitating accident and they started their own label – Bouldevines – to help secure their family future on the land. With the release of Bouldevines Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2010 and Bouldevines Marlborough Riesling 2010, they are entering their fifth decade as grape growers.
What makes their story even more remarkable is that the family’s roots on the land go back even further. Philip’s grandfather started farming the family land back in 1935. The Bouldevines vineyard has the good fortune to be located on Dog Point Road, an area that has earned its reputation as one of the best winegrowing parts of Marlborough.
The abundance of boulders in the soil gives the vineyard its name and helps to give the wines their special qualities, as the vines struggle to overcome the challenges of this infertile soil. In 2010, the vines were helped by ideal weather conditions.
“The Marlborough 2010 vintage was exceptionally long, allowing the fruit to ripen slowly and to perfection,” says Philip. “The resulting wines are set to continue building our growing brand reputation, with our Bouldevines wines garnering high praise, especially over the last two years.”
Bouldevines Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2010 shows lime zest and lemon flower on the nose, followed by hints of passion fruit and red capsicum. The palate adds a big hit of lemon, with traces of white currant, thyme and tomato leaf. The exquisite dry back palate lingers for ages. RRP $19.95
Bouldevines Marlborough Riesling 2010 is a dry style Riesling with citrus intensity. It has an expressive nose of lemon flower and zest, followed by apricot aromas. The palate presents textural phenolics and linear acidity wrapped with stone fruit, leading into a dry, lingering finish. RRP $19.95
The new release Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling will be widely available at retail liquor outlets and restaurants throughout New Zealand as well as in select overseas markets. Locally these wines are also available through our Bouldevines cellar door at The Vines Village, 193 Rapaura Road, Marlborough.
