Debut for Wellington's own talented portrait artist
Friday 28 Jan launched the debut exhibition of 22 year old, emerging portrait artist Natalie Britten. A great great great granddaughter of NZ watercolour artist John Gully, Natalie Britten didn't inherit the same last name, but she certainly inherited the talent.
The collection are of naturalistic and abstract facial expressions, oil on canvas boards. The portraits are realistic, made up of strong contrasts and deep colours. They're also kinda quirky - a majority are 'pulling faces', and are uniquely charming in their own way. The most naturalistic one is of Natalie's late grandfather, John Franklin, whose great grandfather was John Gully.
Natalie has no formal art training, unless half a year of 5th form art counts! She has now been painting for 2 years, and her natural ability shines through this collection.
