Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra Living the Crazy Life

Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra Living the Crazy Life on the North Shore

The Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra brings a taste of la vida loca to the North Shore on 20 February when it holds its Open Day at Takapuna’s Bruce Mason Centre.

In this free event, the orchestra will accompany instructors for half an hour’s worth of Zumba, the latest craze in Latin dance and fitness.

The APO will also be joined by the Northcote Methodist Tongan Brass Band, which is fresh from winning the Entertainment section of the 2011 Auckland Tongan Churches Brass Band Competition.

Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra Open Days are always highly interactive, with backstage tours, musician master classes and the chance to get up close and personal with the orchestra’s players.

As well as the opportunity to have a go at conducting the orchestra themselves, attendees can see the APO rehearsing under young conducting student Tian Yi Lu, who is mentored by Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra Music Director Eckehard Stier.

The day concludes with a rehearsal and performance of excerpts from Dvořák’s New World Symphony, in which young orchestral musicians from Kristin School, Westlake Girls and Boys High Schools, the Auckland Youth Orchestra and members of the APO Young Achievers programme have a chance to sit in with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra.

“The APO’s Open Days provide wonderful opportunities for people to just come along and see how an orchestra really works,” says Barbara Glaser, Chief Executive of Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra. “People can be put off by the idea of ‘classical music’. Open Days give us a chance to show that rather than classical music, the APO simply plays good music. The fact that our Music Director, Eckehard Stier, is leading the orchestra, and Open Day is free for audiences to attend, demonstrates just how committed the APO is about taking music to the people of the North Shore.”
