Te Matatini - World’s Largest Haka

On Sunday, 20th February 2011 there will an attempt to break the Guinness World Record™ for the world’s largest haka at Te Matatini o te Ra 2011 Festival, Wai ō hika Estate, Gisborne.
The haka attempt will take place on the finals day of the festival in front of the Eastland Community Trust main stage.
The current record for the world’s largest haka is 3,265 participants. This was achieved at the Te Matatini Festival in Waikato in 2000. At Te Matatini o te Ra we are encouraging all spectators to get involved in our attempt to undertake and break the current record for the Guinness World Records™
The haka, composed by the festival hosts, the Tairāwhiti Cultural Development Trust, acknowledges the record 42 participating groups in the Festival. Copies of the haka will be distributed through YouTube, Facebook (Te Matatini Festival), the Te Matatini website in February 2011. CD copies will also be sent to all participating groups.
People will be able to download the haka during the festival to learn the haka and find out when, where and how the haka will take place. Throughout the festival the haka will be promoted.
The official independent witnesses for the Guinness World records will be none other than the Mayor of Gisborne Meng Foon and his wife.
So everyone get ready to be part of history making on 20 February 2011 and join in the fun and atmosphere when Te Matatini o te Ra attempts to break the World’s largest Haka.
