Whitehaven bags the medals at Royal Easter Show 2011
Whitehaven Wine Company has brought home a bag of medals from the 2011 Royal Easter Show with Golds, not only for its flagship Sauvignon Blanc, but also for its 2009 Pinot Noir and its limited release 2009 “Greg” Pinot Noir.
It’s a fantastic result for the Renwick wine company founded 15 years ago by the White family.
Whitehaven was also awarded Silver Medals for its 2009 and 2010 Rieslings and its 2010 Gewurztraminer.
Whitehaven’s senior winemaker Sam Smail says Whitehaven’s Sauvignon Blanc is a classic Marlborough savvy.
“Its full and fresh and bursting with the flavours associated with the quintessential Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc; gooseberry, nettle and a definite tropical fruit flavour, with a lovely crisp, clean finish.”
“We pride ourselves on using only Marlborough grapes so it’s very satisfying to be recognised for producing a wine that so genuinely reflects the characteristics of this region,” he said.
It’s the second Gold for the 2010 Sauvignon Blanc which was also singled out for praise at the NZ International Wine Show in 2010.
Whitehaven managing director Sue White is thrilled with the six medals, including the growing momentum of the company’s Pinot Noir.
Last year Whitehaven’s Pinot Noir 2008 collected medals at the Air New Zealand Wine Awards, the NZ International Wine Show and the International Wine Challenge UK and was given a 5-star ranking by New Zealand Cuisine magazine which named it one of New Zealand’s top ten Pinots.
“Both our 2009 Pinot, and the special Pinot we produce from time to time in memory of my late husband Greg, have each won Gold at the Royal Easter Show,” says Sue.
“It shows that Marlborough is now being recognised
alongside Central Otago and Martinborough as a source of
high quality Pinot Noir,” she said.
