The curtains are opening once again
Monday 4 April the curtains are once again opening for Wellington Curtain Bank to help warm up peoples’ houses for another winter season.
“Full length lined curtains can provide as much insulation as double glazing.” senior energy advisor, Sarah Free, at Sustainability Trust says, “According to EECA, in an un-insulated house 12% of the heat is lost through the windows, so a well fitted curtain makes a real difference.” Providing proper curtains is an initial step in keeping homes warm, families healthy and power bills in check.
Last year, Sustainability Trust’s Wellington Curtain Bank provided more than 270 curtains to over 80 low income households in the Wellington Region. "Curtain bank rocks...they have a huge range of curtains, mine were perfect - I took in measurements, and they were ready in days. Yay to insulated windows this winter!" says Gisele, a curtain recipient.
Wellington Curtain Bank is proudly supported by Genesis Energy and made possible with the help of Wellington City Council and Trust House Charitable Trust.
Over the summer period, people donated hundreds of curtains which our skilled staff have repaired and measured ready to be handed out. The curtains will be made to fit and if needed, lined before providing them to low income homes in need of curtains.
The service is set up for people who don’t currently have adequate curtains in their lounge and have a Community Services Card. Eligible recipients need to contact the Wellington Curtain Bank or talk with a partner agency (Citizens Advice Bureau, Barnardos) to obtain a measurement form. People need to measure the windows in their lounge, make an appointment at Wellington Curtain Bank, and bring their completed measurement form and CSC to their appointment. Wellington Curtain Bank is open Tuesday to Thursday 10.30am to 4pm: 04 389 3400 ext705 or email curtainbank@sustaintrust.org.nz.
Wellington Curtain Bank is continually seeking curtain donations and volunteers who can learn skills in making curtains, door snakes and hot water bottle covers. If you have unused curtains, fabric or some time to lend, please contact the curtain bank coordinator or bring your curtains over to Sustainability Trust, contact details are on the website: www.sustaintrust.org.nz.
