Standing ovations for Liszt ambassador
Steinway artist Endre Hegedűs proved why he is regarded as one of the finest Liszt players in the world when he enraptured audiences across the country last week in a series of 5 charity piano recitals raising funds for Christchurch earthquake victims.
The concert series was sponsored by the Hungarian embassy in celebration of Liszt's 200th birthday and marking Hungary's presidency of the European Union. The New Zealand concerts were offered up as fundraising events following the 6.3 Christchurch earthquake on 22 February.
Audience numbers in most centres were disappointing, suggesting that New Zealanders may be feeling somewhat “charitied out”. However, Hegedűs was more philosophical: “People here don’t know me yet – it’s not surprising they didn’t want to take a chance”.
The all Liszt programme provided New Zealand concert-goers with a unique opportunity to hear the often misunderstood Hungarian composer’s music played and the stories behind the music told in an unparalleled, impassioned way.
Organisers are disappointed that takings together with donations fall well short of the targeted $30,000, but are pleased that all who went along found the experience of Hegedűs playing Liszt uplifting.
