27-year old Kiwi surfer returns home as "Lord Quinn"
Expect the unexpected...seems accurate for the most northern competition of the Cold Water Classic Series 2011 held in Scotland! After last year's snowstorm the surfers were greeted by massive waves and sunshine throughout the event. The perfect conditions in Thurso pushed the surfers to sensational performances and sky-high scores, round after round, heat after heat.
Going into the final rounds was an array of different surfing nationalities, experienced riders as well as cold water novices, all determined to take home the most unusual trophy in professional sports: The handcrafted Highland Sword for the winner and the title of Lord for both finalists!
The finals became the highly anticipated peak of an unforgettable week of pro-surfing in the icy waves of the northern Atlantic.
It was a close fought battle between Australia and New Zealand, with 24-year old Brent Dorrington from Queensland finishing ahead of 27-year old Jay Quinn from Gisborne (NZL). Jay Quinn unfortunately didn't get the sword, but he will return home to Gisborne as "Lord Quinn" and with 2640 ASP ratings points and $10,000 prize money!
