Awards Call For Young Sportspeople With Elite Athlete Sponsorship Up For Grabs

Term two entries now open for ASICS Sports Awards as first term winners announced

The search for New Zealand's most talented young sportspeople is again underway as organisers of the ASICS Sports Awards call for entries for term two nominations.

The call comes on the back of five of the country's best intermediate aged students being named as winners of the term one awards: James Moors (Takapuna Normal Intermediate), Matilda Fulljames (Taupo Intermediate), Michael Brimelow (St Josephs Opunake), Jessie Anderson (Weedons School, Christchurch) and Liam Cullen (Verdon College, Invercargill).

Each of the young athletes is now in the running for the Supreme 2011 ASICS Sports Award which will be announced in term four. The overall winner will receive an elite sponsorship package with ASICS, following in the footsteps of ASICS-sponsored athletes like Ross Taylor, Casey Williams and Isaia Toeava.

Open to intermediate aged students (years 7 and 8), the ASICS Sports Awards recognise students who have achieved outstanding results or who have defied the odds to achieve sporting success.

The term two awards will be judged at the end of the school term across five regions - Auckland North, Auckland South, Central, Canterbury and Southland. All regional winners receive ASICS gear both for themselves and their schools, as well as the opportunity to compete for the end of year supreme award.

Now in their second year, the awards were started by ASICS to encourage young New Zealanders to get active and strive to achieve their sporting goals says ASICS' Jenny Holdaway.

"We have chosen to focus on intermediate level (year 7 and 8 students) as we acknowledge that there are numerous sporting awards out there for secondary school students, but very few for intermediate age students who are at a crucial stage in terms of setting foundations for their sporting future," says Jenny.

"The term one awards delivered an extremely high calibre of sporting success at this age level and is an excellent example of the emerging talent across diverse sports within this age group. We look forward to seeing more high level achievers in the term two nominations - these youngsters are the future of New Zealand sport and we want to reward their dedication at such a young age."
