Furious Filmmaking Talent at City Finals

MEDIA RELEASE

17th June 2011

“Furious Filmmaking Talent at City Finals”

At packed out venues across the country this week, hundreds of regional finalist teams gathered anxiously to find out ifthey had made the cut into the 2011 V48HOURS National Grand Final.

The venues were buzzing, enthusiasts were planking and famous faces could be spotted, as the best short films from each regionwere viewed on the big screen.

Winning Auckland team Grand Cheval and their film “The Child Jumpers” had the crowd in hysterics over their new fad movie genre about ‘child jumping’ (or ‘chumping’ if you will). Christchurch winners, Suspect TV’s horror film “Naughty Man” also received a Best Actor nomination for their pint-sized 4-year old lead actor.

Other regional winners included Hamilton: Team Art House Massacre, with “Kingdom of Shadow” (Crime), Taranaki: Team Rubber Soul Productions, with “Well Strung” (Musical/Dance), Gisborne: Team Cuzzie Films, with “Fad Town” (Fad movie), Rotorua: Team Working Title 2, with “Bob’s Not Okay” (Musical/Dance), Wellington: Team Couch Kumaras, with “Sketch” (Road movie), Dunedin: Team Rabies Babies, with “Chatter” (Fad movie).

Founder of V48HOURS, Ant Timpson says, “The bar has really been raised this year and there is no doubt the contest is getting harder to judge than ever before.” Over 800 teams registered this year, a record for V48HOURS, which will mean stiff competition for the eight city winners.

Winning teams and first runner-ups received cash grants from New Zealand Film Commission and Wingnut Films, and each regional team with the best cinematography skills scored for themselves a nifty Panasonic digital still camera.

The eight city winners will now go into a final pool along with many others, where the top ten films from that pool will face up against Peter Jackson’s Wild Card picks in the National Grand Final. The ultimate winner will score a prize pool worth $45,000. The National Grand Final will be held at the Auckland Civic Theatre on 2nd July.
