She’s the voice behind many of the radio and TV commercials currently on air, but as Mari in Stagecraft’s, The Rise and Fall of Little Voice, Julie O’Brien’s well modulated tones are being transformed into a coarse Lancashire accent.

The Rise and Fall of Little Voice which opens at the Gryphon Theatre on 6 July is the story of Mari Hoff (Mrs F Hoff) who lives alone with her daughter Little Voice. When Mari’s latest boyfriend hears Little Voice’s faultless impersonations of famous singers, he determines to exploit her golden voice.

Julie’s 25 year professional career has spanned musical roles in all the big shows in New York, Britain, New Zealand and Australia as well as her more recent voice talent work and roles in New Zealand theatre and film.

She has previously played the role of Little Voice in an Australia production of the show.

“My one-woman cabaret show Julie and friends was inspired by all the singers I had to learn to impersonate when I did that role,” says Julie.

Taking on the role of loud, brazen, alcohol addled mother Mari has been a joy.

“This is a fantastic show with humour, great music and some real poignancy too. I’m just thrilled to bits to be involved.”

The Rise and Fall of Little Voice by Jim Cartwright and directed by Mark Da Vanzo runs at the Gryphon Theatre, 22 Ghuznee Street from 6 – 16 July.
