What Lies Beneath – New Exhibition At City Gallery
An Iceberg in the Hirschfeld Gallery Gabby O’Connor’s ambitious new sculpture This winter an iceberg will appear in the Hirschfeld Gallery at City Gallery Wellington.
Artist Gabby O’Connor has constructed an enormous iceberg-like sculpture which will take over the space and hang from the gallery’s ceiling for her exhibition What Lies Beneath: Gabby O’Connor (2 July–31 July).
This sculpture is constructed out of the most delicate material—tissue paper which has been dyed blue and stiffened with shellac. Hundreds of these thin sheets are stapled together into elegant geometric forms.
O’Connor isassembling her most ambitious iceberg to date in the basement at Capital E for her exhibition in the Hirschfeld Gallery. What Lies Beneath: Gabby O’Connor is the result of in-depth research by the artist into the properties and structures of ice and light. O’Connor’s work will be dramatically lit by both natural light and internal fluorescent lights to cast an Antarctic blue glow throughout the Hirschfeld Gallery. O’Connor is a Wellington-based artist who works across a range of mediums: jewellery, sculpture, theatre design, drawing, and painting.
She often works in collaboration with other artists and designers and has exhibited extensively in Australasia. In 2004 O’Connor received an MFAfrom the University of New South Wales. What Lies Beneath: Gabby O’Connor is the most recent in the Hirschfeld Gallery’s exhibition programme, which showcases the significant work of Wellington’s artists, designers, architects and other active creatives in this city.
