MEDIA RELEASE

July 2011

Cave Kids A Cool Adventure For The School Holidays

Exploring caves and glowworms, searching for treasure, and finding fossils sounds like the stuff of movies, but Cave Kids is offering all this and more in its new 3-hour dry caving adventure in Waitomo's Ruakuri Cave, these school holidays.

This fun, interactive programme is recommended for children aged between five and 12 years, with two exciting tours a day - 10.30am and 1.30pm - from 16 - 31 July 11. Numbers are limited to 14 people per trip so everyone gets to enjoy their caving experience to the max!

"Kids start with a warm up of awesome, team cave-themed activities, then it's off to explore hidden parts of the caves by torch light to find fossils, bones, buried treasure and a magic door that opens with codes," says Liz Lindsay, Discover Waitomo Brand Manager.

"They will also meet glowworms, learn about cave formations and hear of cave myths, superstitions and ghosts.

"All kids need to bring is comfortable walking shoes, a warm jacket and a sense of wonder," she says.

Kids are welcome to bring their cameras to record the moment they discover the remains of ancient creatures, and pick up their very own cave pen and pad at the retail store to help them make notes on their activity sheets.

Parents, caregivers and children over 12 years, needn't feel they are missing out either, with the 1.30pm Cave Kids tour running at the same time at the Black Labyrinth tour, meaning everyone can start and finish their Ruakuri Cave activities together. And once the little adventurers have worked up an appetite there is a delicious combo meal deal available in the restaurant/café for the Cave Kids and their families.

While parental supervision is not required, you are welcome to accompany your children for $49, or take the whole family with a $125 family pass of 2 adults and two children.

"Cave Kids offers a fresh school holiday programme in the amazing Ruakuri Cave, and gives children a chance to learn new skills and about the environment around them," says Liz Lindsay. "Waitomo is only 2.5 hours from Auckland, and is the perfect outdoor adventure and holiday destination for families."
