Inspired Art Inspires Giving Back

Wellington artist Alex DiMercuiro is hoping sales of her recent works will enable her to donate proceeds to earthquake stricken Canterbury, the region which has been her muse and inspired her Beech series of the past few years.
Alex will be exhibiting paintings at The New Zealand Art Show, which is a major annual three-day exhibition from Friday 29 to Sunday 31 July at Wellington’s TSB Arena.
Her paintings reflect a complete personal reverence of the mountain beech forests of Arthur’s and Lewis Pass in the South Island, where many trees are around 400 years old.
Fascinated by exploring fleeting moments within these ancient forests, Alex’s work challenges composition to achieve strong contrasting works imbued with light, colour and potency with a textural three-dimensional painterly technique that is uniquely her own.
Alex says, “I want to be able to give back something positive to the region that has given me so much inspiration. I have such an appreciation and love of the area and people there. It’s been amazing to see how supportive all New Zealanders have been in such a time of crisis.”
A donation of 15% of the proceeds from her paintings will be made to the New Zealand Red Cross 2011 Earthquake Appeal. She is able to do this because the NZ Affordable Art Trust only takes a small commission from artists, which makes the art extremely affordable and accessible to art buyers and investors alike.
This is the 8th consecutive year she has been selected to exhibit since the art show’s inception in 2004. In 2009 she was also selected as one of ten finalist for the Signature Piece Art Award. With around 3000 works from over 500 artists it is now one the largest art exhibitions in the country and a place for artists to be discovered.
From early beginnings as an art student Alex had paintings exhibited at The Dowse gallery - now The New Dowse - in Lower Hutt, 1990. She’s exhibited at several galleries since and now has paintings in private collections throughout New Zealand, France and Australia. More recently her paintings feature in New Zealand publications.
