Pirates
Celebrating David Elliot
From star gazing, to dangerous dragons, to giant pirates. Three beautifully illustrated books have been selected from the Ashburton Art Gallery’s collection of David Elliot’s working drawings to feature in a celebratory exhibition.
Arthurs Star (1986) is Elliot’s first published picture book and tells the tale of a delightful friendship between Arthur and a young star he happens to meet one sleepless night. The illustrative magic of Elliot takes a leap of 8 years as we delve into Dragon Tangle (1994) which follows the adventures of two dragons on their catastrophic romp through a medieval fair.
Finally we look at one of Elliot’s more recent creations and observe the comparisons between the books, the illustrative development through the years is quite obvious to see as we meander through the pages of the award winning Pigtails the Pirate (2002). Come and admire this celebratory exhibition which contains a selection of never before seen illustrations.
Opens Saturday 1st October 1.30pm— Sunday 6th November 2011.
