Northland’s
Selective Soundz music festival is back again for the
2011/2012 summer.
The inaugural outdoor summer
festival held in Mangawhai earlier this year was a
fitting close to a long and idyllic summer. However, this
time around Selective Soundz will be held two months earlier
to usher-in the start of summer on Tuesday 27 December.
Selective Soundz is located on a picturesque site
bordered by trees and lakes near Mangawhai, one of
Northland’s most popular beach holiday spots.
More
than four thousand attended Selective Soundz last summer,
and while the turnout is expected to grow this year, the
licensed, R18 event has more of a spacious and laid-back
vibe than other more intensively populated outdoor music
festivals.
This year’s event hosts the cream of New
Zealand music talent, including Sola Rosa, Anika
Moa, Salmonella Dub, Jordan Luck, Sonz Of Zion, Soljah,
Hollie Smith, State Of Mind (live), Grant Marshall and
Katchafire.
SALMONELLA
DUB are widely acknowledged as being the pioneers of a
unique Pacific style of dub, reggae and drum n’ bass.
Their structure has become more of a collective in recent
years as they draw on a variety of skills from outside the
original core of the band. Since SOLA ROSA’s first
formative releases, Andrew Spraggon has steadily
built a reputation for his deft synthesis of styles and
quiet disregard for the niceties of genre boundaries. With a
catch-all sound encompassing the best of hip hop, reggae,
jazz, Latin, soul and funk, all six of Sola Rosa’s albums
are a potent distillation of the music that has influenced
Spraggon over the course of his career as musician and
producer. STATE OF MIND are the drum n’ bass duo of
Stu Maxwell and Patrick Hawkins. Beginning their careers in
2004, State Of Mind are notoriously prolific producers with
releases across a board spectrum of labels throughout the
drum n’ bass scene. Their third album ‘Nil By Ear’,
represents the peak of SOM’s technical skills to date.
HOLLIE SMITH has been described as “having the
voice of a big black mama from a Southern Baptist
choir”. Over the last 10 years she has toured
internationally and worked on numerous collaborations with
other artists, including Fat Freddys Drop, Trinity Roots &
Recloose. SOLJAH are a five-piece who are creating
waves across Aotearoa with their mesmerising live
performances and ground stomping sound - heavy distorted
riffs with rhythms that knock you off your feet, bouncy drum
n bass to put you back on your feet and tight vocal
harmonies that drip with catchy melodies. ANIKA MOA
is sure to charm audiences with heartfelt songs, razor
sharp wit and a passion for performing live. A finalist in
this Silver Scroll Awards and winner of the Best Female Solo
artist at 2010’s New Zealand Music Awards, Anika is one of
the finest songwriters this country has to offer. JORDAN
LUCK BAND – the iconic kiwi singer, Jordan
Luck, will, as always, perform all the songs we know and
love as well as a collection of recently penned and possible
future stadium sing-a-longs of tomorrow. SONS OF ZION
- with their fusion of reggae, rock, dub and
roots are a talented young 6-piece. Since their debut gig
for the 2007 NZ Music Month they have continued their
momentum performing with such acts as Katchafire,
Cornerstone Roots, Kora, House of Shem and The Black
Seeds. KATCHAFIRE are New Zealand’s premier reggae
band with a huge stage presence, high energy and sweet
rhythms, which make them a crowd favourite among the summer
music festival scene. With years of touring under their
belts the band is constantly in demand in New Zealand,
Australia, Hawaii and elsewhere around the world.
Check www.selectivesoundz.co.nz for
festival information updates as they come to hand. Please
note the Selective Soundz is not an overnight event and as
such no camping will be available onsite.
