The Hirschfeld Gallery celebrates all things bookish

Art and text are inseparable. Catalogues, monographs, exhibition notes, and wall labels surround artworks in a buzzing cloud of words while page works, posters and publications are often created by contemporary artists. This summer, the Hirschfeld Gallery in City Gallery Wellington will profile our local art publishing culture in the exhibition A Mobile Library (26 Nov 2011–12 February 2012).

The Hirschfeld Gallery will be filled with an intriguing array of artists’ books, small imprints and other independently produced publications, borrowed and loaned from bibliophiles around New Zealand. Tapping into the talent of local writers, editors, and designers, this temporary library will be the perfect opportunity to read lesser-known publications and peruse the contents of bookshelves specially curated by designers Luke Wood and Alice Baxter.

These books will be housed in the Hirschfeld on gorgeous reading furniture created by local upand- coming furniture designer, Holly Beals. Beals is Director of Candywhistle, based in Newtown, Wellington. She has worked on interior and furniture design projects for Wellington boutique bar Monterey, as well as clothing stores Kate Sylvester and Area 51.

For A Mobile Library, Beals will design special seating and tables specifically for the careful display of the publications in the exhibition, and to provide comfortable space for gallery goers to rest, chat, and read the books.

Alongside Beals’ furniture and the collection of publications, A Mobile Library will also showcase the work of Wellington-based typographers, Kris Sowersby and Joseph Churchward. Sowersby has received international acclaim for his Feijoa and National typefaces and will be collaborating with Duncan Forbes from design company The International Office to produce a series of new posters of his work.

Joseph Churchward is a Samoan-born graphic designer and typographer whose prolifically produced typefaces are distributed and used internationally. In the Hirschfeld, samples of his distinctive type design will be boldly presented on the walls of the gallery.
