Unique Learning Event Unites NZ Designers
Type Camp encourages designers to explore

Vancouver, November 27, 2011 – Type Camp New Zealand, a unique five-day typography training event for design students and professionals, debuts at the Whitecliffe College of Arts & Design January 22-26, 2012. This event offers local designers a rare opportunity to engage in practical seminars and hands-on workshops with a world-class visiting teaching team. Type Camp founding director and instructor, Dr. Shelley Gruendler, is one of the few people in the world holding a PhD in the History and Theory of Typography and Graphic Communication from the University of Reading in the United Kingdom.

Type Camp New Zealand dedicates five full days in Parnell, Auckland, to leading-edge exploration of typography. The event celebrates an environment of creative freedom, experimentation and camaraderie. “We use the word ‘camp’ to refer back to that time of your childhood where you were free to explore in a loosely structured environment,” explained Dr. Gruendler.

Internationally renowned instructors include Dr. Gruendler, Stephen Coles, head of typographica.org and former FontShop type director, and Marina Chaccur, a Brazilian lettering artist and type designer with a graduate degree in Type Design from the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in The Hague. All instructors encourage learners to explore typography and design in new ways. “Type Camp helps you to see typography with new eyes, while you provide your own focus,” said Dr. Gruendler. The week includes exploration of the newly burgeoning world of webfonts, the tricky side of type selection, as well as non-Latin typography and type design. Learners will also benefit from afternoons of studio time in the letterpress studio at the Auckland University of Technology (AUT).
