With a thousand movie-goers a day over the busy Christmas and New Year holiday period, Downtown Coastlands cinema manager Michelle McConaghty says the cinema is now well and truly connected with the community.
“We’ve had lots of kids movies and with patches of poor weather the movies have become a popular entertainment option of choice for children on the Kapiti Coast.
“Many children have redeemed the thousands of movie vouchers purchased in the lead-up to Christmas and given as gifts,” says Michelle.
Hit movie of the summer at Downtown Coastlands is Tintin, a film well-suited to the 3-D format.
“It’s been interesting to see parents and grandparents, obviously fans of the Herge comic books and albums, introduce their children and grandchildren to the action-packed antics of Tintin, Snowy, Captain Haddock and others.
“The Muppets movie also has lots of adult attendees, accompanied by children. The adults loved the movies as much as the kids, but perhaps on a different level.
“It’s film experiences like this that make Downtown a family-friendly cinema,” said Michelle.
While increasing numbers of people are booking on-line and using the ticket kiosk to get their tickets, many still prefer to join the Candy Bar queue and collect or purchase their tickets and ‘movie food’ at the same time, according to Michelle.
Top Candy Bar item over the holiday period was the ‘Muncher Tray’ at $6.50 containing popcorn, a fizzy drink, lemonade ice-block and lollies. Rolled ice-creams, combos, popcorn and lollies followed in popularity for Kapiti movie-goers.
