Netball Competition all about Love of the Game, Camaraderie

MEDIA RELEASE 6 FEBRUARY 2012

Netball Competition all about Love of the Game and Camaraderie

As the Netball competition drew to a close today at the NZ Masters Games, Games Ambassador and Community Netball Manager for Netball New Zealand, Leigh Gibbs described Netball as a game players love for life.

“The competition has been so impressive with 87 teams competing. I am sure it reflects the fact that women never lose the love of the game. The competitors here have played with such great spirit and had so much fun. The Games are very much about friendship and camaraderie and getting together to play netball socially or competitively is always rewarding.”

One of the oldest teams competing has been Kauri Me Off. Five of their players are over 60 and one is a great grandmother. They have put together a team at every Masters Games in Dunedin since 1992.

A popular team at the Netball has been the Liquifaction Ladies from Christchurch. They were a big hit at the traditional fancy dress parade on the first day of competition winning first prize dressed as Building and EQC inspectors and singing a very humourous song with earthquake themed lyrics. The team are sponsored by Novus ‘show us your crack’, which along with their team name, is emblazoned over the 22-seater bus they travelled in to Dunedin. The Liquifaction Ladies won Silver in the Social 41- 46 yr group although many of the players are in their 50's. The medal was their first since they began competing at the Games six years ago.

Spokesperson for the team, Anna Swain says they had a fantastic time at the Games.

“It was good to be away from the shakes and the only muscles we hurt were our abdominals from so much laughing."

WE don’t want no, LI-QUE-FAC-TION
(Sung to the tune of Brick in the Wall)

WE don’t want no, LI-QUE-FAC-TION
Sick of power cuts and seismic ac-tion
Portaloos, magnitudes, building blues, paid our dues
We can’t get no, no insurances!
When we are lying in our bedsa at night
And that rum-ble wakes us up in fright
Was it 4? was it 4.5? we guess
Will we have any more of that silty mess
Anymore cracks- we won’t be impressed
We don’t want no, no EQC
Or Gerry Brownlie,... wanna be shake-0 free
Liquifaction Ladies Liquifaction Ladies .... Yeah!
